Beginnings

The Animal Assistance & Education League (AAEL) was founded by Jan Mitchell and Mindy Sterling Houser after Jan had taken a trip to Debrezeit, Ethiopia in 1997 to assist the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH). She had been asked to do the photo documentation of the health crisis and the teaching of proper equine care.

The conditions were heartbreaking and chronic. After working with the locals, it became obvious that much of the present information they had about equine care was unhealthy for horses. Since introducing new methods of health care, the villagers have found new enthusiasm for reducing disease and stress in their workhorses.
